The concert had many kritis that are not often heard. She also chose kritis from many composers. To me that was the real highlight of the concert yesterday. The hall was packed and not a place to sit. The organisers were constantly moving people ‘an inch at a time’ to accommodate the pouring rasika into the hall. I reached as the varnam was coming to the end.
Atana kriti was ok , she had an elaborate swara prasthana to end which I thought was decent. Revagupti, preceded by a short slokam was good. Bilahari was the first alapana with some good violin return from Ganesh Prasad. I was expecting a veravl or kalpana swara for this but it did not come. She announced dhanyasi, and another not often heard kriti was presented. I thought it would have been more appealing, had she sang this a pinch slower. A short round of swara prasthana followed. Neither this had the sub-main treatment. Two short kritis came in as filler; the dasarnama tuned in jingala was interesting.
Keeravali, alapana was detailed with lot of ‘akara’ singing. It was good, so was the return on violin. However, the kriti and neraval that followed were sang very well. Kalpana swara wasnt all that great, though she did some interesting patterns. The percussion duo had their turn , which was adequately good. Neyveli Skandasubramaniam ,however was pretty impressive through out.
Post main, had a series of interesting kritis, from Bhadrachala Ramadas to a Malayalam song on Guruvayurappan, a Tamil kriti on Murukan and a Dasarnama in Kannada. As we are approaching the Independent Day, she clarified, she sang a couple of patriotic songs. Concert concluded with a thillana in 4 ragams, composed by her mother.
She sang a lot of kritis to the liking of many in the crowd. However, I was disappointed because, there were only two alapana and only one neraval.
