Her guru was supposed to perform yesterday. Smt Vedavalli was not well and sumitra, announced in the program list as vocal accompaniment had to step into her guru’s shoes and sing instead. The disappointment of the absence of Smt Vedavalli was told to us by the person who cut receipt of payment. I aas on two minds on whether to attend or give it a skip since it is not a free concert. Luckily, the accompaniment did not change.
I’ve heard sumitra before and she did present a good concert the last time at Nadasurabhi. Hence, I decided to stay on. To my relief, she gave a decent concert yesterday, despite taking up Kalyani as main !
Concert started with a varnam , which I presume is in devamanohari. It was a short varnam and nothing special about it. Chakravakam kriti and the swara was also went non eventful. She moved on to her first alapana of the day with Yadukula Kamboji followed with the expected divakara tanujam ( on a saturday evening). A filler of sindhu mandari came before a fresh kannada kriti ‘vandisidavare’ . The neraval was a surprice and beautifully presented, especially the ‘vittala vittala’ place.
Saveri had everything for the main of the day. Good alapana and the return, neatly presented kriti with neraval and swara ( moved to 2nd kala swaras pretty soon). the absence of the tani avartanam gave hope for a larger pallavi on its way. the wait did not last long , after a quick Sri raga kriti kalyani came in detail. Alapana was decent and so was the tanam, with no real ‘aha’ moments for me. Pallavi was set to tisra triputa in khanda nadai, which was interesting, and I thought the ‘eduppu’ was a beat after ‘samam’ ( not so sure now!). Pallavi was detailed with a longish ‘trikalam’ by the vocalist ( and no seperate violin play) and ragamalika swaras.
Tani avartanam was very intricate pattern oriented and not the typical ‘banging competition’. Arunprakash through out the concert was in his typical sublime form with some soft touch. At time he was too soft and inaudible ( for the yadukula kamboji kriti), otherwise he was superb in the evening. Sukanya Ramgopal was playing along very well.
Post main was short with a ragamalika slokam and the abheri kriti of Vasudevachar and a basava vachana ( I think !) before the mangalam. Good concert by Sumitra Vasudev at the Indiranagar Sabha yesterday.
