First concert for me in this series, and it wasn’t one I remember for a long time. Pretty ordinary affair, started on time and finished well ahead of the stipulated time.
One had great expectations on arrival, grand function, large crowd, beautiful saturday evening. Started of well with reetigaula krithi and a not often heard mohanam piece. The kharaharapriya main started pretty early for the evening ( 45 mins into the concert) and she did a brilliant detailed alapana for close to 17 mins. The expectation soared high after the good start, but the krithi rendition , the short neraval and short set of swaras didn’t do justice to opening. The tani avartanam followed was also a meek affair. A RTP was in the offing, and after a quick surutti , she started with the alapana of ranjani. Wonderful it was, but what followed wasn’t all that impressive. Tanam was short, the pallavi was short, straight away started with ragamalika swaras in kanada and malayamarutham before winding up with ranjani. There was no trikalam at all. There wasnt any time pressure at this point. The usual tail pieces including a thillana concluded the concert at 9:10. Take of the day was the alapana of kharaharapriya and ranjani.
