Sanjay delivered another fabulous concert yesterday at the Taralabalu Kendra, on the last day of the 22nd Annual Music Festival of RT NAgar Cultural Association.  He started the concert with another not often heard varnam in rItigaula. For the variety of singing varnam, he definitely lead the current musicians. The nice varnam followed with another beautiful singing of asAveri kriti , with few rounds of swaras.

Sahana alapana came in soon. I found him singing more of the ‘non-melodic’ phrases of the raga. Varadarajan as always was impeccable in his return. Eee vasudha was very good, with detailed neraval and kalpana swaram.  Ritigaula, asaveri and sahana…he added huseni to the list with his classic ‘enna punniyam’.

Purvikalyani was brilliant. The way he build up the raga, the way it was structured and progressed, it was a treat. Luckily, Aniyan was not with me to confuse me with Pantuvarali. The alapana was top class, and similar was the violin return. Parama pavana rama was sung very well and the chitta swaras were brilliant. Neraval was splendid. Interstingly, he continued singing the kriti post neraval and chose to sing kalpana swaras at the ‘chittaswara’ ‘P,NDMG with some improvised bhrigas. At this point, Neyveli Venkatesh did a mrudangam swap , however there was no tani avartanam here. He continued the concert with a prudent ‘dharini telusukonti’.

Pallavi was expected to be a grand affair, since he chose it to be the main. I was expecting one of the major ragas and was initially confused between kharaharapriya nad keeravani. Gowri manohari alapana was very good. Tanam was the highlight of the day. Singing a ragamalika tanam, Sanjay and Varadarajan lifted the concert to an entirely different level. The appreciation was evident from the listeners, as they applauded for each tanam turn. Pallavi had nothing spectacular to mention. Sung in normal adi tala, with no trikalam and swaras in main raga without any ragamalika swara singing. I listened to and watched Neyveli Venkatesh playing the same tani avartanam for the umpteenth time.

Post the speeches and garlanding ( did they miss Varadarajan , moving from Sanjay to Neyveli Venkatesh directly ?) had a purandara dasa devarnama in desh , a heart warming rendering of Swathi Thirunal’s  karuna nidhana and the typical Sanjay’s staple diet of manathir kugandadu and ‘maname dinamum’ before the mangalam.

A typical Sanjay fair. Full of energy and vigour. Spectacular purvikalyani and a brilliant gowri manohari ( well, upto the tanam) made my evening.
