( had to leave at this point)
His name had been coming up in various discussions with friends and other listeners. There had been discussions on his 6 speed varnam rendition as well. I missed a couple of his previous concerts in Bangalore. He has all that takes to go a long way. A slightly nasal voice, comfortably traversing all octaves, talent and well honed skills and confidence that is contageous on the stage.
Concert started with his signature (!) multispeed varnam. I was counting and thought he did another “shadkala varnam’. But I was wrong, as he himself clarified it was in 7 speeds. To me its a display of his skills more than its aesthetic values. I hasten to add that even at the bullet speed, there was no distruction of the rAga bhava’, for which one need to give him credit. After the varnam exercise , he moved on to a ganesha krithi composed by his father. ( I am not sure if I captured the name correctly, my apologies if otherwise). Kalyani alapana was perfect to my comfort, lasting mere 2 minutes. Kriti was new and have no previous listening experience, hence cant commend on its merits. But it did flow smoothly and I he did a commendable job with a rather long neraval line ( which again I am not sure if I got it right). A slow and leisurly paced anandabharivai was very good, but the fast chenchu kamboji was just ok.
Purvikalyani alapana was decent and BK Raghu was very good in his return. Both kriti and the swara that followed was good. Khamas javali came in as a filler before an elaborate keeravani alapana. Done in 3 phases, it was very very looooong and a bit tedious. I liked the 3rd part of the marathon. Tanam was splendid and wonderfully supported by Raghu. Pallavi , set to adi tala was very well executed with trikala and ragamalika swaras. Ragamalika swaras and the concluding keeravsani swaras were very good.
I had to leave as the tani avartanam started. ASN swamy and his percussion supprt did a good job through out the concert, especially being tested with multi speed varnam at the beginning of the concert. Vighnaraja is a good talent and is one artist to watch out( and listen) for, climbing into greater heights.
