I haven’t attended their concert before. Being the first concert, I was impressed with their selection of kritis and the general presentation. The alapanas in general was ordinary, through the standard phrases and techniques, there was no innovation of something to make an impact. I am not saying their alapanas were bad, but there was no punch in neither Arabhi nor sahana. Shanmukhapriya was much better.
Concert had a lot of new or not regularly heard kritis. Started with the BMK varnam in chalanata, the Wodeyar’s composition in mayamalavagaula were new to me. The mayamalavagaula kriti especialy was sang very well. The neraval was good and so was the single speed kalpana swaras. Sahana was a disappointment, barring a short alapana from Srinidhi. A fast paced filler in janaranjani was brilliant with those takes at ‘pAhimAm’ were very appealing.
However, the main pallavi was conceived and delivered to perfection. Alapana , alternating between the vocalists were good, especially the second half. Tanam was very good. Pallavi set to khanda triputa in tisra gati was done with trikalam, with some good support by the percussion team. Ragamalika swarams were good too.
The main percussionist did a fairly decent job. He played with soft fingers and was following adequately ost of the times. Their tani avartanam was also decent, without any banging the poor instrument.
Post main had a long tail, with 3-4 kritis came in succession setting in ‘madhyama shruti’. In all a farily decent concert with a huge variety of talams ( I guess there were at least 3 set to khanda chapu) and good mix of composers.
