The vocal duo Ranjani and Gayathri presented a good concert yesterday at the Nadasurabhi annual festival, day 3. The neraval and swara of mayamalavagaula, the kAnaDa alapana and the pallavi stood out in the list for me.

Short Saranga varna started off the proceedings, soon getting into the mAyamalavagaula kriti. They took great effort in an elaborated neraval and a fitting swara singing. This was brilliant with some fantastic support from the violinist. Kanada alapana came and I thought Ranjani did a good job here.  Few rounds of swara would have added to the impact, but that was not the case.  A quick filler preceded the main of the day Kamboji, where the younger(?) took the alapana. It was interesting in parts but was lacking the overall kamboji aesthetics. Charulatha was good in her return. However, overall the main failed to create any impact in me. There was no neraval and the swara had nothing to rave about. Tani Avartanam was good, especially when he was playing with softer fingers.

A Pallavi was in the offing, having skipped the neraval for the main piece. Hamir kalyani alapana , done in two phases ( alternating)  was very good, so was the tanam.  Pallavi had typical structure including trikalam. Hamir Kalyani swaras was sung in 3 speeds and was fabulous. They continued with ragamalika swaras, mAND was brilliant.

The tail pieces had a sindhubhairavi kriti and a requested abhang. A good concert yesterday at the new venue ( I could not attend the first two days).  Waiting for the next set of concerts..

I attended the MSG concert on Sunday. It was really one of the highlights of our recent move to India…MSG is a legend in my eyes and felt fortunate to see him live. I had to skip Sanjay’s concert at the last minute…how was it? Also, I am curious whether there are good concerts around Koramangala/Sarjapur area and how would I get to know about their existence? Thanks.

Neither am I a critic… I also enjoy music as a common listener..
Happy to note that you liked their concert. Did you attend the rest ?

I was there too. Though not a hardened critic, I enjoyed the music as a common listener. I liked the younger Gayatri’s voice which was more resonating and different than her elder sister’s voice.

I had been to one of their violin concerts almost 7-8 years back in the US when they took some time in the middle to sing…now I am not even sure whether they give violin performances.

Not sure whether others noticed this but I felt that both them, and Unni the day before, did too much alapanas that wore me down a little bit.

Looking forward to MSG on Sunday.
