Four neravals, four alapana and chakkani raja as main. It had all that I asked for in a concert. You can guess my happiness. What an evening. The rain gods which lashed the city in the afternoon stayed back for this period making a perfect evening for music.
First thing first. For me the stellar performance of the day was by the junior Sankar. Having given ample chances during the concert, the youngster made use of the opportunity and rose to the occasion and sang brilliantly. He has a stong , open throated voice, complemented his father very well. Here is a youngster to watch out for. Kudos to him.
Concert started with a first tie listening of a Mysore Vasudevachar’s varnam for me . Tulasi dala had written neraval all over and I was happy to hear one up front in the concert. Little did I know that I will be in for a treat as far as neravals are concerned. Latangi alapana was short and Patnam Subramanya Iyers kriti was brisk. Fast paced neraval was a surprice. Other alapana of reetigaula and pantuvarali were good but nothing spectacular to talk about. Two fillers before the main set the stage for a grand affair.
Kharaharapriya alapana was long and was split between father and son ( so was pantuvarali) and they both did a good job. Violin, marred by por amplification setting for the first half of the concert came good with kharaharapriya and he did play some nice return. The krithi, neraval and swara were pleasing ( though I thought Sankars voice was thinning towards the end).
Arjunkumar and Giridhar Udupa, continued their brilliant accompaniment through out the evening with a spirited tani avartanam. Very good concert by the Bangalore team today at the Seshadripuram Ground.
