Arguably, this is the best concert of the series so far. I did not attend the concert of OST, which I believe was top class. But, yesterday’s concert was very very good. As the case with previous days, I missed the initial 3 kritis, arriving late. As I was walking towards the hall from parking , Anandabhairavi was heard. Kumudakriya alapana greeted me as I found a seat. The singer came to the rescue of the listeners by announcing the raga, though ‘ardhanArIshwaram’ was lingering in the air. Bilahari and Neelambari filled the space before the main. Bilahari was good, the not often heard nIlAmbari krithi did not live upto my expectation.
Main Mukhari alapana was brilliant. Slowly building up from the slow leisurely phrases to the pinnacle, which I enjoyed immensely. I was hoping and discussing with Guru, on the possibility of ‘muipEmu’ and there was no disappointment. Beautifully executed neraval and swaras with some great support from Charulatha.
It was beyond 8:30 after the customary speech and bouquet. “Pallavi?” came through the mike with responses of yes and hands up from the audience. Nattakkurinji, it was set to rather complex thala structure with some difficult ‘eduppu’ , executed well. The shortish RTP affair with trikalam and ragamalika swarams , was also very good.
Post main had Annamacharya, Sadashiva Brahmendra and Bhadrachala Ramadasu krithis. The kriti ‘Sri nilayam’ , I understand, was set to tune by their father. Concert ended with the surutti mangalam. As I said earlier, this was the best so far in the series.
