Sanjay and team gave us a very good concert yesterday at the Ganjam Festival held at Chowdiah Hall. Started with a sahana varnam , quickly moving to Purandara Dasa kriti in Natta with some fast set of swarams. One of his regular ninnu Vidachi was to follow with a slow and emotive rendition. Purvi Kalyani was the first to detail, with the Swathi Krithi dEva dEva jagadeesha. This followed with a rather short neraval and elaborate swaras to the delight of the audience. With a brilliant raga outline of Brindavana saranga ( two phrases to be precise and I liked that) came a very unusual ( ?) but beautiful soundararajam. I said unsual because, it was sung in a very very slow tempo , not heard from Sanjay.
Bilahari alapana was very elaborate and brilliant. So was the return by Varadarajan. I was hoping for Sri Chamundeshwari Palayamam, and there it was. My excitement was dampened after he indicated to Mannargudi Easwaran to start tani avartanam, with out neraval or swaras. Big disappointment. Tani avartanam was very good, the master leading all the way.
After a quick sucharitra piece of Kotteswara Iyer, came the expected RTP. Both raga and tanam were very detailed and very good as ever. Pallavi itself was not long, but he entertained us with some beautiful ragamalika swaras especially husEni and ranjani. Post Pallavi consists of a sindhu bhairavi piece, contined with the sindhubhairavi swaras of the pallavi, and a dasarnama ( Sanjay usualy sings this in rAgEshri, but this time it was in dEsh).
Despite the disappointment with bilahari, the concert was very good.
