Sri Vaikom Jayachandran and team presented a beautiful concert yesterday at the Satish Dhawan Auditorium in IISc Campus jointly organised by Bheri and Sanskruta Sangha of IISc.
A fantastic kIravAni and a brilliant saveri, adding on the earlier saraswati and Vitapi made the day. A hamsadhwani kriti by Tulaseevanam, not often heard at this part of the world, begun the process. Saraswati alapana was the first with the popular GNB kriti. Vitapi alapana was elaborate and a krithi on his home diety of Vaikkom Mahadeva Temple, written by the chief priest of the temple was sung. I was given to understand that this kriti was set to tune by Sri Jayachandran himself, and the kriti itself was very good.
KIravANi was fantastic, both alapana were brilliant. While we were anticipating ‘kaligiyunte’, Sri Jayachandran surpriced me with yet another rare kriti. NamO namaste gIrvANi, of Dikshitar was the first time hearing for me.( I have a doubt here : The original , I guess is in rAga gIrvANi ( or ghavambOdi – 43rd Mela). Jayachandran sang this as keeravani, as far as I know). Both neraval and the swara was detailed and brilliant. After the filler of nAda tanumanisam, ( again with a brisk set of swara), he started the main sAvEri alapana. A very detailed and elaborate rendering of the Shyama Shastri kriti was a treat.
Harinarayanan was brilliant through out the day and had a short and good tani avartanam. Young Aditi is very talented and did a great job accompanying the main artists. Her alapana of Keeravani and Saveri were top class.
A memorable concert yesterday by Vaikkom Jayachandran.
