Smt Neela Ramgopal gave a superb concert yesterday at Rama Seva Mandali.  You could not ask for a better accompaniment for such a concert and did they perform wonderfully well.  the Nattai swara especially towards the end, interesting alapana of sahAna – very different phrases from what is usually heard, an outstanding neraval for thodi were the sparkling point of the evening.

A look at the song list can reveal a lot to you. The concert had feel of ‘rare composition concert . Most of them are not often heard in concerts, these days. She was all energy until the end of RTP, post which I thought fatigue took over and she was sounding weak ( just a couple of tukkadas). RTP was very structured and in complicated talam, with detailed tanam and the trikalam and ragamalika swaras.

Accompanying artists did a fantastic job. R K Sriramkumar was fantastic in his reply of sahana and thodi. Patri Satishkumar and Karthik were consistantly good, and did a brilliant tani avartanam.

Her voice in general was on a lower side, but was holding until the customery break. I thought she had a problem post that. The initial issue, you noted was more to do with the overall amplification and the accoustics of the room. Violin and Mrudangam was sounding louder that the vocal. But, it had nothing to do with her, I think. My appreciation was more on the content 🙂

The laptop idea was his own, and I know it is a distraction for many around him, especially when the hall is small. Until he develop a taste in this or he is old enough to be ‘home alone’ , I am not finding any better idea. On the other hand, I have seen more crowd around him than inside the auditorium..

Couldn’t agree with you more on the accompanying ‘accomplished’ artists.
But I differ with your views on the main artists. With all due respects to Smt.Neela Ramgopal, I found her voice a bit ‘muffled ‘. May be her age (+75)or the acoustics or the day but I couldn’t resonate with her voice. Strictly my personal opinion.
p.s : BTW, great idea to bring a laptop and CD’s to keep your kid occupied. May be will try that next tim 🙂
