What ever was presented , was pure and gem. Sri Chandrasekharan was in fine form on that day, so much so that he even sang few krithis along with playing the violin ( do I like that, is a separate question). I will be disappointing many if I say that the best of the concert was the sindhubhairavi and mand pieces. They were played with so much bhava , they almost brought tears in my eyes.
The bEgaDa alapana and the mohanakalyani by bharathi were very good. Vara narada was also interesting with some fast paced swara singing. He announced Sankarabharana as main piece pretty early into the concert. The initial phrases of Sankarabharanam alapana were so moving. The alapana was 2 phased, giving a hope for tanam playing. That was not the case. After the applause, he said, second phase and played again ( which I thought was little off ). Swara raga sudha started with he singing along ( again, my preferences are obvious).
Srimushnam Rajarao was all over the place. We hardly heard Udupa playing. One has to give it to him for playing with soft fingers and using the ‘thoppi’ effectively. Tani Avartanam was long and so some good returns by Udupa.
There was hope for a pallavi or some tAnam. But he gave us an outstanding sindhu bhairavi and mAND instead. They were fantastic. Very good concert as usual at Essae Music , a pallavi would have taken it to a different level.
