Kasturirangan presented a beautiful concert yesterday at the ramaseva mandali concert Koramangala, with some brilliant support from C N Chandrasekharan. Started 20 min behind schedule, and ended at 9:15, the concert lasted less than 2:30 hrs. But, within the given time, he did a fantastic job.
Started with the pancharatna kriti in Sri, and a short margahindolam, he quickly got into the first alapana of the day and how majestic it was. Haven’t heard many hamsanadam alapana recently, but this one was outstanding. I was expecting bantureeti to come, and surprisingly, oothukad krithi kalyana rama was sung. The kalpana swara followed was also exceptionally good, so was the violin return. Three quick krithi’s followed in succession ( where he could have sung a short alapana or a short set of swaras for one of them) before the main.
Shubhapantuvarali alapana was very good. All those familiar phrases ( listening to TNS) came out brilliantly. He did grahabhedam three four times ( to hindOlam, madhyamAvati, mohanam, sudha dhanyAsi : Thanks to Sri Raghavan) brilliantly and Chandrasekharan on his turn reproduced them in similar fashion. Ennalu Urake was sung in its gradeur with a detailed neraval and swara. Concert ended with a couple of devarnamas..
Very good concert. May be another alapana, a set of swars for the item 4,5 or 6 , neraval for hamsanadam ( he did repeat the line ‘raghava rama raghu rama’ a couple of times with violin reply, but wasnt a full fledged neraval) would have made the experience in an entirely different level.
