Sri T N Seshagopalan inaugurated the week long Music Festival at Chowdiah Memorial Hall yesterday, and stellar performance from HIS part. I said HIS part because, the rest of the people on the stage was visibly struggling to match his rendering and his calculations. His initial couple of krithis were average( to his standard) as his voice still had few issues. But, it improved drastically during the main kalyani and it stayed good for the rest of the evening.
The kalpana swaras of nAyaki was brilliant and so was the kalyani alapana and the krithi. During the swara singing, he ventured into his usual jugglery with the permutations and combinations to the discomfort of the rest of the performers. It would have been a delight to the listeners, had the rest of the performers measured upto his mastery.
He was constantly looking at his watch and we had a scare that the concert is going to be a short one and he is likely to wind up with few ‘after main’ pieces. We had weathered the rain and the evening traffic to reach the venue and did not want to go disappointed. To our relief and delight, he started the alapana of vasanta and an RTP was there to come. As he has done a couple or more times recently, this too was his three raga pallavi in vasanta, bhairavi and vasantabhairavi. It was pure bliss, as his voice was in full co-operation by this time. Next 50-55 minutes were the best part of the evening. He conculed the evening with a beautiful rendition of the Meerabhajan and a devarnama by Purandara Dasa.
