This time we were lucky. He was in good form from the beginning and there was rare occasions of slip in shruthi. So, expectation was for a grand concert. It was a very good concert, in his true style, but something was missing to call this a great one.
His selection of krithis were superb, almost every piece sung was from a different composer. Superb tala mix, amazing sets of swaras , the unimitable (?) alapana with Shrutibhedam ; it was obvious that this was a very well planned concert. H K Venkatram was in outstanding form yesterday. I haven’t seen him playing so well recently. He matched the maestro in every instance , including the well executed shruthibhedam in kalyani alapana.
Khamas alapana and the swarakalpana followed were the one highlight of this concert. RTP was a surprise, elaborate alapana and the violin reply took almost 30 mins and another 12-13 mins of tAnam with some fast paced tanam singing. However, the pallavi line was too short taking away some glory off the superb beginning. Ragamalika swaras followed had some brilliance.
Surprisingly, there were no neraval for any of the krithis, and the pallavi was very short to mention. There were many fast paced ( super fast) swaras in almost all the krithis ( gauLa and khamAs to mention a few). Having said all that, I liked this concert and had a great time.
