Smt.Gayathri Venkataraghavan gave a very good concert yesterday at the Gayana Samaja. She was performing here for the first time, as it was announced later.  What was impressive about this was the choice of krithis ( rare krithis and from a vast variety of composers).  Even though she sang every krithi very well, for me , the take of the day was the madhyamavathi krithi, which I have not heard before. The alapana and the swaras that followed after a rather long krithi was very impressive. Sri Cheluvaraju and Omkar was superb today, though the decibel level for percussionists were on a higher side.  Nalina Mohan was also good, especially during the bilahari and Madhyamavathi krithis. A good concert on a weekend.

Thank you Sri Phalguna for the detailed write up. Interesting to note that you were a part in GV singing this krithi. It was indeed marvellous. So was the Neelambari krithi.

I haven’t listened to your Guru’s concert live. I will make it a point to do so, next time. Do let us know if there are any concerts lined up in the near future.

    Hello Mr. Jayan

Yes my guruji has built a huge memorial in Vadiraja Swamy’s name. It is in Bangalore near Hulimavu on Bannerghatta Road. About 80+ krithis of Vadiraja Swamy have been released in cassette form & all these have been notated & the scripts are in Kannada & released in book format.

Yes Manniso Venkatesha has been tuned by RKP Sir in Madhyamavathi. And that krithis being sung in Revagupthi – I have no idea with that.Generally Haridasa Krithis are sung in the raga the singer likes to sing. Just that he/she while tuning them just needs to keenly look into the sahitya of the krithi & the weight that it carries while choosing the raga. Then I guess Haridasa krithis also will have the same weight as a Trinity composition when sung. I feel this Madhyamavathi krithi is no less to any other heavy weight krithi in the same raga. Infact when I sent the script of this Krithi to Vid Gayathri Venkatraghavan she was amazed at the tuning & the krithi pattern. Also she was amazed when she heard my guru singing this krithi. So its just about how the krithi is tuned which ever raga it might be & needs better thinking while tuning. Thats it. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Well to consider the fact that Vadiraja Swamy is a poet/composer/etc etc. He is a great social reformer is what I can call him. He has done lot of work for people in general. His books are famous even today. Example – his book Theertha Prabhanda – a collection of his thoughts when he went around to many holy places in INDIA. Even today this book is considered to a reference for many students & scholars. His krithis carry lot of messages to common man. There are lots of things to be understood from his compositions. He has written many books & many krithis. He has written in both Kannada & Tulu. Just that many people are not aware of his compositions that they dont sing them quite often in concert platforms. December 2006 in BSK II Stage my guru sang about 8 concerts for 8 consecutive Sundays with only Vadiraja Swamy krithis. He says still he can sing about 4 concerts wiht only krithis of Vadiraja Swamy.

I am blessed to be associated with my guru & Vadiraja Swamy. When I listen a composition of vadiraja I feel the day is made & get blessed & never that day has gone tough for me. He is the person who entered the Brindava when he was alive & he lived for 120 years. A great social reformer who has had a great impact to mankind. With his blessings I feel even a Stone can get life. There are living examples for this today.

    Thank you so much.

Good to know that your Guru had tuned many of the krithis. I had read elsewhere that Sri R K Padmanabha has made/built a memorial sort of on Sri Vadhiraja Swamy.

Also, it would be interesting to know if these krithis tuned by your Guru, has come out in any recording ? Or was it compiled and released as a book ? Also, was this tuned in Madhyamavathi by your Guru ? Smt M S Sheela render this in rEvagupti , I guess.

Would you call Sri Vadiraja Swamy as a composer or a poet ? I thought, he had written many books and these songs / krithis are taken from some of those works. I’m being more curious as I do not see many people sing these krithis as they do for Purandara Dasa or Kanaka Dasa or other contemperories.

Once again, thank you for the details and all the best with your learnings. One day hope to hear you sing these krithis 🙂

    Jayan
