Rudrapatnam Brothers-Vocal Duet
(Vid.Sri.R N Thyagarajan & Vid.Sri.Dr. R N Taranathan)
Vid.Sri.Mysore M Nagaraj-Violin
Vid.Sri.Umayalapuram K Shivaraman-Mridangam
Another power packed concert with all the stalwarts on the stage. To be honest, I went for this concert to listen to Mysore Nagaraj and to see Sri UKS perform. And I was not disappointed on both fronts. Concert of Rudrapatnam Brothers are always a subtle event. Very smooth, without the noise and gimmicks and I like their soft approach. Nagaraj was very good as always, expecially during the Thodi Alapana. At the end of the thodi swara singing, UKS asked him to play again for a fitting finish, which he obeyed with some marvellous playing. There were two tani-avartanams in the concert, one after the main krithi and one shorter version at the end of the RTP. Sri UKS treated the audience , which included Srimushnam RajaRao, Sudheendra, Krishna, Jayashankar and other who is who of Bangalore percussion scene, with some speedy fireworks with his fingers.
Here is the concert song list :
01 vanajAkshi ( varNam) – kalyANi – Pallavi Gopala Iyer
02 mEru samAna ( N,S) – mAya mALava gowla – Thyagaraja

07 RTP (T) – kalyANi

No ragamalika swras. At the end of the swaras, Sri UKS gave another round of tani avartanam ( about 10 mins).
08 erAthaguNathara ( jAvaLi) – kEdAragowLa – Dharmapuri Subbarayar
( requested by UKS )
09 rAmanAma pAyasakE – Anandabhairavi – Purandara Dasa
10 mangaLam – sourashtram
The mid concert speach started with the host Sudheendra and he handed over the mike to his Guru to do the honours. Srimushnam Rajarao, speaking in Kannada, did a good job with his very humourous style. Some relief from the usual “praise all” secretaries. He then requested Sri UKS to speak a few words and bless the students , which he obliged.
UKS requested the duo to sing Pallavi before ending the concert, and they chose the same raga used in Varnam to sing the Pallavi taking the clue from Sri Raja Rao who in his introduction noted that in earlier days, main krithi used to be sung in the same raga of Varnam.
